Khabarovsk is on the eastern side of Russia and very close to Japan. Signs in the hotel were in Russian, English an Japanese, and they even had a Japanese restaurant.
Along similar lines, I had a funny encounter in a Russian restaurant in Khabarovsk: the Russian waitress's English was not much better than my Russian, but we discovered by accident that both of us spoke Japanese - so I ordered my meal in Japanese in a restaurant in Russia :)
Unfortunately, I did not have time to go for a walk in Khabarovsk (and it was raining, too...), but I shot a couple of pictures from the hotel (counterclockwise): skyline, concert hall, Armur river, and a picture I saw in the airport - the church reminds me of the Church on the Blood in Ekaterinburg...
